The Puppetmongers introduce a stunningly beautiful world of imaginative experience, based on their own travels in Iran, in this classic and moving Mid-Eastern tale of a humble man whose generosity inadvertently draws him into the heady and dangerous world of powerful people and high finance. The story is resolved as each character finds their own parameters for happiness.

Performed with skillfully carved rod marionettes and delightful visual effects inspired by traditional Persian street performance, the play is a celebration of the richness of Persian culture and shows a very different aspect of the middle-east rarely portrayed in the media. In 2004, Puppetmongers were invited to return to Iran to perform Walidad at the 10th Tehran International Puppet Theatre Festival.

Stunningly beautiful… The Powells make use of a delightful range of visual effects, accompanying them with traditional music, sound effects, and a gently ironic narrative to create an impression of another society’s culture which will not soon be forgotten. Winnipeg Free Press
