History and pure fun are integrated in this imaginative retelling of the much loved classic fairy tale. Puppetmongers reset the story in 1834 Upper Canada, just as “Muddy” York is to be renamed Toronto, and Ella is a kind and capable young girl whose good nature is imposed upon by her new step-family who have come from England with ideas about their own privilege. True to the original tale, with a little magic and some imaginative special effects she does get herself to the Ball, and to the satisfying conclusion of the story. The play is ingeniously staged with a traditional marionette theatre that transforms, as the story unfolds, into scenes evoking the wilderness, settler life and early Canadian society.

It is a Cinderella that Canadian children can call their own![/vc_column_text][mk_image_slideshow images=”4554,4553,4555,3977,4132,926″ image_height=”500″][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1574496692891{margin-bottom: 0px !important;}”]

REVIEWS

It was the best performance for students I have seen in 25 years of teaching.  Your play was a superb historical “lesson” combined with a well-loved fairy tale; your sets were intricate, fascinating and interestingly complex; the way you mixed the puppets in with your own roles made it feel like we were watching a cast of thousands and your performance was flawless. You kept everyone from 9 years old to us adults enthralled… you are awesome performers who have lit a spark in many a heart today.    Grade 4 teacher, Charles Howitt PS

Puppetmongers have been doing smart, sweet puppetry for years. [Cinderella in Muddy York] plays beautifully to children and adults alike… the humour is subtle and beguiling. This show is magic for everybody.    Lynn Slotkin, CBC

…Puppetmongers, one of the most consistently delightful groups in the city. They work with great delicacy, wit and imagination, using carefully crafted puppets in charming stories.    Richard Ouzounian, Toronto Star

…one of those lovely traditions that bring richness and colour to the multifaceted theatrical life of the city.    Robert Crew, Toronto Star

…charmingly low-key show that’s a welcome antidote to an excess of commercial razzle dazzle. …it’s sweet, sly and highly accomplished.    Richard Ouzounian, CBC
