Cinderella in Muddy York

The much loved story of Cinderella is reset in 1830’s Upper Canada, just as “Muddy” York is to be renamed Toronto, and where the very Canadian Cinderella is expected to cater to every whim of her recently immigrated stepmother and sisters.  True to the classic fairy tale, with a little magic and some imaginative special effects our resourceful girl does get herself to the Ball, and to the satisfying conclusion of the play.

Directed by Sue Miner; devised, built and performed by Ann Powell and David Powell. The performance is ingeniously staged with a traditional marionette theatre that transforms as the story unfolds into scenes evoking the wilderness, pioneer life and early Canadian society.  Cinderella in Muddy York is a whimsical but informative take on Toronto history that tickles the funny bones of children and adults alike.

It was the best performance for students I have seen in 25 years of teaching.  Your play was a superb historical “lesson” combined with a well-loved fairy tale; your sets were intricate, fascinating and interestingly complex; the way you mixed the puppets in with your own roles made it feel like we were watching a cast of thousands and your performance was flawless. You kept everyone from 9 years old to us adults enthralled… you are awesome performers who have lit a spark in many a heart today.    Grade 4 teacher, Charles Howitt PS

…charmingly low-key show that’s a welcome antidote to an excess of commercial razzle dazzle. …it’s sweet, sly and highly accomplished.    Richard Ouzounian, CBC
