Classes and workshops for beginners and experienced puppeteers

The Toronto School of Puppetry is a vehicle for the dissemination of Puppetmongers' approach to puppetry and theatre. Its intent is to demystify the art form, enlighten and enthuse the participants, and lead to generally more interesting and higher quality puppet shows and puppetry in theatre.

The School was founded in the spring of 1996, when Johan Vandergun, of Lampoon Puppettheatre, and Ann Powell & David Powell, of Puppetmongers, discussed the lack of professional development and puppetry education available for adult learners in Toronto. We decided to do something about it. Ever since then Puppetmongers, with their partners in puppetry and theatre, have presented seasons of classes and courses in a wide range of puppet and puppetry related skills. Each season holds a different roster of offerings and instructors.

Since 1996, about 300 adult students from all over North America have enrolled in more than 100 classes and courses. Participants are professionals and students of theatre, puppetry or the visual arts; teachers, educators or social workers; and from many other backgrounds. All share a passion for puppetry.

Instructors have included these artists, and members of the following companies: Barbara Klunder. Camellia Koo. Clarissa De Young. Clay & Paper Theatre. David Smith Marionettes. Fifth Sun Theatre. Gail Geltner. Lampoon Puppettheatre. Mimi Meckler. Nat McHaffey. Noreen Young Productions. Night Kitchen Theatre. Old Trout Puppet Workshop. Pea Green Theatre. Princess Productions. Puppetmongers.
